Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice is the moment when the Earth is tilted the farthest away from the Sun, giving us the longest night of the year and the shortest day of the year. After this peak of darkness, our days progressively get longer and more full of light as we welcome in the new season.

Interestingly, for the three days after Winter Solstice on Dec. 21, the Sun seems to stop moving before “resurrecting” on December 25. The story of the resurrection of Christ follows the Suns journey at this time of year, following the story of Isis and her child Horus with this same myth, and coinciding also with the myths of Mithra and Saturn as well as others that correspond with this time of year.

Many pre-Christian and pre-pagan gods were based on the Sun. It is no wonder that the Sun seems to stop for three days before being “born again” and heralding longer days around this time of year. And also no wonder that “birthdays” of many gods coincide with this time of year. Solstice, derived from the Latin “sol” for Sun and “sistere” or “to stand”, literally means “Sun standing still.”

Santa Lucia (meaning light) is also a saint who is venerated at the time of the solstice which coincides with the returning of the “light” as the days continually get longer and the nights shorter after the solstice. La Befana is an italian folk goddess thought to leave candy and gifts to well-behaved children at the time of the Solstice. And many of us are familiar with St. Nicholas.

There are many gods, goddesses and stories cross-culturally that align with the Winter Solstice and this time of year, as our ancestors were very much in tune with the natural cycles and seasons of nature.

Come join us for a spell that honors the darkness of the Solstice while inviting back the light, removing obstacles and opening roads for the New Year ahead.
